In an open letter, Elon Musk and a group of business executives and academics on artificial intelligence called for a six-month moratorium on the training of systems more potent than GPT-4, citing potential threats to society and mankind.
More than 1,000 people, including Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque, signed the letter, which was published by the non-profit Future of Life Institute. The letter called for a hold on advanced AI development until standardized safety protocols for such designs were created, put into place, and independently audited by experts.
The letter stated that "powerful AI systems should only be developed after we are convinced that their impacts will be good and their hazards will be manageable."
The letter also described the possible dangers that human-competitive AI systems could pose to society and civilization in the form of economic and political upheavals and urged developers to collaborate with regulators on governance and regulatory agencies.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT was released last year, and since then, it has encouraged competitors to produce products with similar features and businesses to incorporate it or related technologies into their apps and products.
The letter comes as the European Union's police agency Europol on Monday joined a chorus of ethical and legal worries over cutting-edge AI like ChatGPT, warning about the potential abuse of the system in phishing scams, disinformation campaigns, and crimes.
